Recovery follows the operation you actually had

A single-level disc operation, a decompression for a tight canal, and a fusion with screws are different procedures. They do not share one timetable. Anyone who quotes a single number of days for 'spine surgery recovery' is smoothing over that difference.

What follows is a general outline so you can prepare questions. Your discharge paper overrides it.

Talk to the clinic about this topic

Leave your name and mobile number if you want the clinic to call about the condition in this article. This is not a diagnosis.

10 digits, starting with 6, 7, 8, or 9. Do not add +91.

Your number is used only to reply to this request. The clinic confirms the next step on the phone.

The first days

Most people are asked to walk on the day of surgery or the next morning, with help. Walking is used to keep the chest clear and to lower the chance of clots in the legs. Sitting for long stretches and bending to lift a bag are usually limited at first. The exact limits should be written down before you leave hospital.

The wound is kept clean and dry. A little soreness and a pulling feeling are expected. Pain medicines have a plan: how often, for how many days, and which ones to stop first. If pain is rising instead of easing, call the team rather than adding medicines on your own.

  • Fever, or pus or an opening at the wound
  • New or clearly worse weakness, or a foot that newly drops
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the private area
  • Calf swelling and pain, or sudden breathlessness
  • A severe headache that is worse when you sit up, which can follow a fluid leak

The following weeks

Many people after a straightforward disc operation return to desk work in a few weeks, and to heavier work later. Fusion takes longer because bone has to heal, often over a few months, and follow-up X-rays check that. Physiotherapy starts when the surgeon says the wound and the construct are ready, not on a date copied from the internet.

Driving, two-wheelers, and lifting a child are individual clearances. Ask at the follow-up visit. Numbness that was present for months before surgery can linger even when the pressure on the nerve has been removed. That is a known limit of nerve recovery, not something a webpage can time.

Before you agree to surgery

Ask who to call after hours, which hospital the operation would be in, and what the follow-up schedule looks like at Brain & Spine Care or Aarvy Healthcare. Recovery planning is part of the consent conversation. Dr. Deepak Kumar's team can also talk through a personalised cost estimate. This article does not list prices.
