A smaller opening is still an operation
Minimally invasive spine surgery uses a short incision and special tubes or an endoscope to reach a disc or a tight spinal canal. The aim is to do the needed work with less muscle stripping than a long open cut.
Patients sometimes hear that this means a minor procedure or a recovery without discomfort. That is not a fair description. It is still spine surgery. There is still a risk of nerve irritation, infection, a dural tear, and incomplete relief. The difference is the route, not the disappearance of risk.
Talk to the clinic about this topic
Leave your name and mobile number if you want the clinic to call about the condition in this article. This is not a diagnosis.
Who it tends to suit
It is considered for selected one-level slip discs and for some narrow canals, when the fragment and the anatomy line up with a small working channel. It is a poor fit when the spine is unstable, when several levels are badly compressed, or when the bone has slipped forward and needs to be realigned.
Endoscopic spine surgery is one version of the same idea: a camera and instruments through a narrow port. If the segment also needs screws and a cage, the surgeon may still recommend a fusion. The MRI decides, not the brochure word.
Questions worth asking in the clinic
Take these to the consultation. A clear answer matters more than the name of the technique.
- Which level are you planning to treat, and what will you leave alone?
- Why this approach instead of a standard microdiscectomy or an open decompression?
- Will I need implants as well?
- What symptoms should get better, and which may not?
- What would make you convert to an open operation during surgery?
Where this is discussed in Gurgaon
Dr. Deepak Kumar discusses these choices at Brain & Spine Care and at Aarvy Healthcare. He has advanced training in spinal implants from Germany, which is relevant when a smaller approach is not enough and the spine needs support. Bring the MRI films. A personalised estimate of cost is given on a call. It is not printed on this website.
